Fortifying Your Smile
With Fluoride Treatments at
Morris Plains Family Dentistry
We’re dedicated to helping you keep your natural teeth strong and healthy, and fluoride treatments are one of the best ways to protect your enamel. While enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, it can weaken over time due to exposure to acids, sugars, and other everyday factors—even with good oral hygiene.
If our team at Morris Plains Family Dentistry sees signs of demineralization in your enamel, we may recommend a fluoride treatment to help fortify it. Though fluoride is often found in toothpaste and city water, some patients benefit from an extra boost with a professional fluoride treatment to strengthen their enamel even further.
What Are Fluoride Treatments?
Fluoride treatments is a preventive treatment method, where we apply fluoride directly to the enamel, protecting against tooth decay and strengthening your teeth. We often recommend fluoride for individuals who suffer from having exposed roots, dry mouth, pits or grooves in teeth, low fluoride exposure, or high sugar intake. Children, whose brushing habits may not be as effective and who tend to consume more sugary foods, often receive fluoride treatments at every visit until age 18. Adults, however, can benefit as well, especially if they experience one or more of these conditions.
What Can You Expect During Fluoride Treatments
If we determine a fluoride treatment is right for you, we’ll begin with a thorough cleaning to prepare the teeth. Afterward, we’ll apply a fluoride gel to your teeth to provide a strong, protective layer. For children, we may recommend systemic fluoride (such as drops or tablets) when teeth are still developing, helping to strengthen them even before they emerge.
Why You Should Consider Fluoride Treatments
There are several advantages to fluoride treatment. Not only does it nourish the enamel and protect against cavities, but it also promotes a process called “remineralization.” Remineralization helps your teeth naturally repair early decay and fortify small pits, which might otherwise turn into cavities.
